Remember the little self service grocery store on most high streets?, sadly no longer with us.

Summary

There is not much information on these little shops. You’d have seen them on Britain’s high streets from around the 1950’s.

Most research we did found the initials stood for Value Grocers and formed the company slogan “Very Good”. however we have also been told it stood for Voluntary Group

Effectively VG stores was a chain of independent grocers operating under the VG brand not unlike Premier etc today. They supplied products under the VG brand alongside the better known brands.

Where Did They Go?

Interesting question. They didn’t actually go anywhere but were re-branded.

A company called Watson and Philip were a partner in both the Spar and VG chains. Around 1994 they carried out a re-brand to create a more unified chain. It’s stores became Alldays (another story).

However a number of individual stores continued under the VG name and a small number are still out there, although the brand has now gone.
