If you want good beer make the “V” sign V’s the sign you want a pint of Vaux. the popular strapline from the classic ad.

Once found everywhere, Vaux was responsible for a number of well known brands, including: Vaux’s Stout, Double Maxim, Sunderland Best Bitter and Norseman Lager.

Summary

Founded by Cuthbert Vaux in 1806.  Over the years the company went from strength to strength as it built it’s portfolio of brands.

By the 1990’s Vaux had expanded into hotels and had a profitable brewing business.

Where Did They Go?

Sadly, despite the company’s strong position and a buy out offer from it’s management, in 1999 on the advice of a Corporate Financier Vaux closed both it’s breweries.

However this is a story with a happy ending. In 2000, two former Vaux directors and a former head brewer formed what is now called the Maxim brewery, resurrecting the Vaux brand. Initially they brought back the former Samson and Double Maxim brands.

Despite the former brewery being demolished in March 2020 the new Vaux Brewery announced plans to open a brand new brewery and bar in the centre of Sunderland and that’s exactly what they did.
