“A man’s gotta chew, what a man’s gotta chew” said the ad. Made by Rowntree-Mackintosh these popular soft toffees were shaped like fruit pastilles and came in a red tube.
A big treat for kids during the 1970’s and 80’s, they also came as Assorted Toffo (blue tube) in strawberry, banana, chocolate and original toffee flavours and Mint flavour. (green tube)
Summary
Who made Toffos sweets? The sweets were originally produced by (John) Mackintosh of Yorkshire later, in 1969, Mackintosh merged with Joseph Rowntree to form the now famous Rowntree-Mackintosh brand.
‘Toffo’ first appeared in Britain’s sweet shops as ‘Toff-O-Lux’ during the 1930’s. Toff-O-Lux’ was rebranded as ‘Toffo’ in 1975.
Where Did They Go?
Or did they? Rowntree Mackintosh was taken over by Swiss company Nestlé in 1988. Products continued but under the Nestlé brand.
‘Toffo’ was discontinued in 2008. However they were re-introduced around 2020 in a small 19.2g tube, produced in the United Arab Emirates. Have to admit I’ve not seen any in my local sweet shop but you can suposedly get them online.
