Summary
Midland Bank was founded in Union Street ,Birmingham in August 1836 by Charles Geach. It was originally known as The Birmingham and Midland Bank.
Following a a period of nationwide expansion, including the acquisition of many smaller banks, in 1923 Birmingham and Midland Bank adopted the name Midland Bank Ltd.
By 1934 Midland Bank had become the largest deposit bank in the world.
Where Did They Go?
In 1992 Midland Bank was taken over by the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Ltd (HSBC) who by 1999 had phased out the Midland brand.
An announcement was made in June 2015 by HSBC that it intended to re-brand it’s branches in the United Kingdom.
The then Chairman Douglas Flint described the old Midland brand as “odds on favourite” to return.
Sadly it was not to be, when, in September 2015 the company announced that branches in the United Kingdom would carry the HSBC UK brand.
