Summary

Fine Fare started life in 1951 founded in Welwyn Garden City as part of a company called Howardsgate Holdings.

By 1962 the company had over 200 shops. Acquired by Associated British Foods in 1963, by 1974 the company had embarked on a major expansion plan, taking over a number of other chains.

Fine Fare was regularly listed as Britain’s third largest supermarket and in 1983 became the first British Supermarket to sell organic foods.

Where Did They Go?

In 1986 Associated British Foods sold Fine Fare to the Dee corporation who closed some stores whilst others were re-branded as ‘Gateway’.

By 1989 the Fine Fare name had disappeared from the high street.
