When you think of guitar heroes you automatically go to The Shadows, Jet Harris, Eric Clapton, George Harrison and Brian May as they get the lion’s share of Radio air play.
Summary
Bert Weedon was a regular fixture on BBC Radio and TV during the 1950’s. He played alongside some of music’s greatest performers of the time such as Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, Nat King Cole, Billy Fury, Adam Faith and Tommy Steele as both a session musician and accompanist.
In 1959 Bert was asked by Top Rank Records to make a record as a solo guitarist. That record was ‘Guitar Boogie Shuffle’ and made Bert Weedon the first British Guitarist to enter the UK singles chart.
Perhaps Bert Weedon will be best remembered for his hugely successful and influential 1957 guitar tutorial book “Play In A Day”, selling over one million copies. Many of the biggest guitar stars site the book as being a major influence on their learning and playing. He also wrote a follow up “Play Every Day.”
Where Did They Go?
Bert Weedon stopped releasing records after 1979 concentrating on his charity work. He was awarded the OBE in 2001 for services to music.
Sadly we lost Bert Weedon in 2012 aged 91.
