No, not the musical instrument, but the two finger chocolate bar with that catchy add.

Banjo, Banjo, the one for you and me….

Summary

Not many people realise that the original Banjo chocolate bar was sold in the Greater London area of the UK, but the product was discontinued in 1954.

In it’s original form Banjo was a chocolate wafer bar, with a chocolate filling, covered in milk chocolate, similar to a Kit-Kat.

Banjo was made by Mars UK and was reintroduced in 1976 under a big advertising campaign.

This time round Banjo was a twin bar (like a Twix). It was similar in it’s ingredients to a Drifter but it had a chopped peanut layer al covered in chocolate. It was packaged in a distinctive navy blue wrapper with bold yellow text. It was also the first chocolate bar to to have a heat-sealed wrapper closure instead of the reverse-side fold found on most domestically-produced chocolate bars at that time.

Less common there was also a coconut version available that had a red wrapper with yellow text.

Where Did they Go?

Banjo Mk2 disappeared from our shelves around the mid 1980’s and to date has yet to return.
